['njuː 'heɪvn], Stadt in Connecticut, USA, Hafen am Long Island Sound, 125 100 Einwohner; Sitz der traditionsreichen Yale University (gegründet 1701) mit zahlreichen Museen; vielseitige Industrie, u. a. Herstellung von Waffen, Munition, Werkzeugen, Maschinen und Gummiwaren.
 
 
New Haven wurde 1638 von Puritanern als Siedlung mit theokratischer Rechtsordnung gegründet und 1643 mit angrenzenden Siedlungen (Milford, Guilford u. a.) zur Kolonie New Haven verbunden. 1664 wurde es der Kolonie Connecticut angegliedert, deren Hauptstadt (zusammen mit Hartford) es 1701-1875 war.
